spending cuts. a lot coming out of defense. these are not long-term structural changes that will put us on a path to a balanced budget. that will not happen. melissa: the other thing that struck me about the graphic when you look at it, the threat from republicans hey, we would rather go over the cliff rather than take the president's deal, to me doesn't look terribly credible when you look at actual numbers. unless you take into perspective we're not really going over for 10 years. but it is just going over the cliff is so focused on raising taxes, on absolutely everybody and spending cuts are really not that impressive in terms of getting, you know, the gap down smaller. they say if you compare it to the white house plan they would rather go over the cliff. i'm not sure that is really credible given those numbers. what do you think?. >> way some republicans not all, growing number of republicans are looking at this, assigning blame to the president, making clear this is the president's plan and they don't have anything to do with it is politically more beneficial for them both in the

. we have two guest hosts with us. welcome to both of you you. we have a lot of things to talk about. the white house says that a republican counteroffer does not meet the test of balance. the latest republican offer would overhaul the tax code and raise $800 billion in new revenue, it would also seek $600 billion in health savings and $200 billion for revising the cost of living increases for social security. the net savings would add up to $2.2 trillion over ten years. now, again, this is the republican counterproposal to the plan that the white house has already put out. speaker john boehner has said that this is something that is much closer to the bowles-simpson proposal. erskine bowles saying the gop offer does not represent the plan, he says both sides are kind of far away from it at this point and that it's now up to negotiators to figure out where the middle ground is today. >> bowles said that the mid point that i used back in -- this is where we were last year. so used the mid point of the negotiations, but it's in longer the mid point i guess. >> he also said -- he is a t

not knowing what awaits us, we got a whole new school springing up as represented by my friend doug kass, who writes on real money pro. doug told "the new york times" in a piece that led today's business section that one of the biggest stock market worries, the pain from higher capital gains and dividend taxes would barely have an impact on the market. because so few individuals have taxable accounts. only 14.7% down from 23.9%. doug's calling it a canard. and others say the job cuts for 2013, which seems to be put as many as two million to be made jobless won't be as fast or as high. plus the tax increase can be rolled back. in other words, a deal will eventually be reached, so why bother to sell. okay, so the "it's all overdone" crowd may have a role to play here. particularly because it turned out that when we got a deal to avert the debt ceiling back in the summer of 2011, we caught a gigantic rally. it was a mistake to sell. this is debt ceiling two. let me tell you where i come out. while nothing is irreparable when putting things back together if we go over the cliff, i'm getting worri
